Character of the Russian blue

The Russian Blue is an independent, intelligent and very clean cat. You can live happily in a small apartment, but not in a spacious but noisy house. He claims a quiet environment without surprises, since he prefers to follow his routines with complete peace of mind.

He will easily learn everything you teach him, but his ability to open doors and windows can cause you more than one displeasure. To prevent leaps into the void, it will be advisable to take precautions.

It will barely make a mess, but in return it will demand the same neatness with its belongings. If they are not clean, they will prefer not to eat or relieve themselves in another corner.

He loves games , which is why he gets along well with children, as long as they are not provoked. He loves running and climbing obstacles all over the house.

The Russian blue cat is somewhat shy around strangers, perhaps because they disturb his love for the predictable and the known. However, with acquaintances he is most affectionate.

He tends to choose a family member as his favorite and will not hesitate to spend as much time with him as possible. It is so sensitive that it can anticipate the mood of its favorite human.

Recommended care for the breed

This breed demands the usual care in all cats. In this sense, you should brush it with a brush with fine and closed bristles to suppress the port hair. Thus, you will prevent trichobezoars or complications derived from the ingestion of hairballs .

Provide him with a scraper, a piece of string or wood so that he can sharpen his nails to the right size. Neglecting them could cause damage to your furniture and the accumulation of bacteria.

Don’t forget to brush your teeth at least once a month. Your oral health deserves it. Their eyes and ears must also be sanitized using specific products for this, thus avoiding many of the main eye diseases that cats suffer .

The veterinary recommendation is that you bathe him once a month during the winter and every 15 days in the molting season.

As for its diet, it is a breed that has a huge appetite so it will demand a large amount of feed or natural food, depending on how you want to feed it (Obviously we recommend the BARF natural diet).

History of the Russian blue breed

Its origin is located in Arkhangelsk , a port in northern Russia, hence this breed is also known as the “archangel cat”. In fact, it is said that their fur was highly valued by the tsars to adorn their coats.

According to one of the existing theories about their origin, around 1860 an English merchant ship took several specimens to Great Britain, where they began to exhibit them for their elegant bearing and lustrous fur.

The first public appearance dates from 1875 in the feline exhibition that took place at the Crystal Palace in London. As of 1871 they are presented under the name of ” Russian shorthair” , “blue archangel” or ” blue foreign” .

The other theory points to the Mediterranean as the birthplace of the Russian blue, where it was similar to the French chartreux or Carthusian cat, calling it “Maltese cat” or “Spanish blue”.

In 1939 the breed was officially recognized. Given the shortage of pure specimens as a result of World War II, English breeders had to cross them with Scandinavian breeds or with the Siamese cat , giving rise to the current Russian Blue.

As a result of these crosses, there are 2 variants : that of European origin, which includes English, continental (preferred in Spain) and Scandinavian, and that of American origin.

The Scandinavian is the longest-haired while the English is the largest and darker in color. The one of American origin is the slimmest of all and with a lower ear point.

In the USA they began to create their own line from the year 1947 combining the British and Scandinavian lines.

As a curiosity, the adoration they feel for this breed in Japan or that barely meows deserves your attention. Its delicacy is such that it emits soft sounds to communicate. As you can see, his personality falls in love. You will not find an easier coexistence partner.
