LaPerm cat Breed Information

The LaPerm has a curious morphology, the result of a natural genetic mutation. Its bushy tail of curly hair and large ears will catch your attention. They are very attached and intelligent cats with whom there is no room for a boring coexistence, they will always find a way to surprise you.

As it is a breed that has not been manipulated by man, it enjoys excellent health, raising its life expectancy to 20 years. Its genesis is in the US and relatively recently, 1982. This explains why they are still little known in Europe. Do you know that it can be considered a hypoallergenic breed?

Character and behavior of the LaPerm cat

LaPerms are very affectionate, docile, and intelligent felines. They are the 3 qualities that best describe them. They forge a strong bond with their human guardian and do not tolerate being separated from him for long. Although they are active, they are obedient and quick learners. In fact, they will soon learn how to open doors or get food from the attics.

They adapt easily to all types of homes, although they prefer to have access to the outside to explore and climb. They get along well with children and other animals, but it is always convenient to approach this socialization at an early age. When they are puppies they especially enjoy throwing objects for the mere fact of seeing them fall.

Care required by the LaPerm cat

If it is a long-haired specimen, you should brush it daily to avoid tangles and the ingestion of dead hairballs. In the case of medium or short hair, a weekly brushing will suffice. The characteristics of its hair favor that it hardly loses it, so people who are usually allergic to cat hair benefit.

As in other breeds, their eyes, ears, and teeth demand attention. For the cleaning of the ears, you can use physiological saline, in the case of the eyes a specific eye drops and for the teeth a toothpaste without fluoride, especially for cats. To prevent obesity and its associated complications, provide them with a varied, quality, and rationed diet.

Exercise, both through intelligence toys and through interactive ones that you can also take part in, will help you stay physically and mentally healthy. Regular visits to the vet, to vaccinate and deworm it, are also a must for the owner of any cat.

LaPerm Health

Its brief existence and the absence of the intervention of the hand of man in the creation of this breed means that no notable diseases are known. To avoid colds and flu, make sure you provide a warm environment, free of drafts, and go to the vet for any signs of illness.

History of the breed and fun facts

This breed emerged on a farm in Oregon (USA) in 1982. A kitten named Curly had a litter in which some of her kittens were born hairless. After 4 months they developed beautiful curly hair that caught the attention of its owner, Linda Koehl.

He decided to give continuity to this feature and chose the name LaPerm in reference to the (permanent) curling hair salon technique. North American breeders were soon interested in this breed and in 1997 it was recognized through a club set up for this purpose, called LPSA.
