The Devon Rex is the result of a natural genetic mutation in 1960, known for its fine and smooth curly coat.
At first, similarities with the Cornish Rex were found . However, its curly coat is caused by the different gene mutation.
This is a sociable, fun, loyal and devoted breed to humans and loves to enjoy their company.

Devon Rex cat history
The Devon Rex originates from England in the 1960s, or more precisely from Devonshire as its name suggests. The name “Rex” is given to curly-haired cats.
In 1960, Beryl Cox collected a curly-haired male cat from a litter of cats that lived in an abandoned Devon mine. This cat was crossed with a tricolor cat. Then a male with curly hair was born, named Kierlee by his owner. This cat was crossed with Cornish Rex specimens, but the descendants were smooth-haired.
Therefore the two genes where such mutations were located – the Devon and the Cornish – were different and both recessive. To resolve this mutation, they decided to cross Kirlee with his daughters. The breed therefore has a long history of inbreeding.
The Devon Rex was officially recognized by the FIFe in 1967. In the United States, this breed was differentiated from the Cornish Rex as of 1979. It is also recognized by the CFA and TICA. The latter association published a standard in 1988.

Devon Rex hair is wavy and dense, growing very slowly. It only has fluff on the cat’s stomach. As a result, it produces very few allergens . A Devon Rex is therefore a recommended hypoallergenic cat for someone who loves cats but is allergic to them.

- Malassezia Dermatitis:Malassezia pachydermatis is a type of yeast that can cause ear infections, oily skin, and itching.

- Feline Neonatal Isoertrolysis. The Devon Rex population has two different blood groups that are not compatible if they are mixed by breeding between a mother and her kitten. The disease causes the destruction of red blood cells in newborns after consuming the antibodies present in breast milk.
Life expectancy of the Devon Rex
